First off let me give a hat tip to Charles & Hudson for sharing this story. Thanks Timothy!
Drywalling is one of the hardest jobs in construction due to the heavy lifting and extreme mess! Well I’m glad to say things just got a bit easier for drywallers with the introduction of USG’s Sheetrock® UltraLight Panels. The new panels are up to 30% lighter than traditional drywall which is a significant difference when you lift these bad boys all day long!
Sheetrock® UltraLight Panels are re-engineered, lightweight gypsum wallboard panels with a patented, composite design. The noncombustible core is encased in 100% recycled face and back papers. The natural finish face paper is folded around the long edges to reinforce and protect the core and the ends are cut square and even. The long edges of panels are tapered, allowing joints to be reinforced and concealed with Sheetrock joint treatment systems.
Lightweight, quality wall and ceiling panels for interior applications:
In addition to being lighter these panels can be finished with all the same materials and tools that are used today with traditional drywall. With today’s rising costs for insurance and health care this new product is sure to make an impact on contractors bottom line. The savings are likely to hit the end users pocket as well.

What is your opinion on this new drywall. Would you use it over over drywall for a basement install? Is it just as good as the other versions out there? Would you install it in your basement or do you prefer something more durable?
Jeff - I haven't used it on a job yet. So I'd have to say the verdict is still out.
will 4x12 on 2 foot centers with textured ceilings work with ultra light sheet rock. with out sagging? thanks
what thickness? 5/8" will possibly work, but I wouldn't recommend it.
