Quite a few readers have asked us why the original mantel design included such a large mantel shelf. As you can see our mantel supports a collection of Santa lights and that is why the shelf was designed to be so large. The base of each light is about 6 inches in diameter so the mantel shelf was built about 8 inches wide. The large mantel shelf also creates a nice surface to hang the stockings from.
What we wanted to point out in the article is the importance of considering all design parameters. When you design a mantel think about not only every day decorations but how you’ll use the mantel for seasonal decorations. We happen to like our design quite a bit because it works well all year round.
Do you decorate your mantel for the Christmas season? We’d love to hear how everyone else decorates theirs.
