Buy Dad A Cordless Drill For Father’s Day

Buying Cordless Drills Isn’t Hard If You Know Some Basics About Cordless Batteries

For all you last minute shoppers looking for a gift idea for Father’s Day I recommend you pick up a cordless drill. Cordless drills are one of the most used tools around the home. While some of you may feel quite overwhelmed when trying to choose a cordless drill I hope a couple of each tips will make that process much easier.

It’s All About Batteries

Today there are litterally dozens of choices when it comes to cordless drills. However, there are really only two major categories when it comes to the batteries that power those drills. The old standby for years has been Nickel Cadmium (NiCad or NiCd).  Over the last few years a new battery type has emerged and it’s Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion).

So you might be thinking what’s the big deal? Why not just buy the newest battery type and move on. Well it’s not that simple because both batteries offer advantages over the other.

  • Nickel Cadmium – This battery platform is in millions of drills and power tools around the world. It’s a proven technology that’s reliable and inexpensive. NiCad batteries are much cheaper than Li-Ion which makes them very attractive from a cost point of view. They also perform much better in really hot and really cold environments.  You can buy this very affordable drill set for the Father on your list for just $69.00.
  • Lithium-Ion – Lithium-Ion batteries are not all that new today. Today the technology for these batteries is amazing and continues to improve. While Li-Ion batteries are more expensive they do offer some great benefits. Unlike Ni-Cad batteries they can be charged far more frequently and easier without the worry of battery memory.  They are also much lighter and last much longer. This great Li-Ion set can be purchased for $149.00.

So the big question is what type of battery system is best for a Father’s Day Gift? Well the answer really depends on several things. First off is price,  NiCad systems can be half the cost of Li-Ion. Second would be environment. If the drill will be used in extremely hot or cold environments then the NiCad will perform better. Lastly is life of the tool/battery. If the drill will be used heavily year after year Li-Ion will do much better.

So why not go pick up a nice cordless drill kit for Father’s Day.
